Jian Ma graduated from Penn State University with a Ph.D. in computer science. His research interests focus on computational biology, with two primary thrusts.
In the first thrust, his group is using comparative genomics approach to better understand the human genome as well as cross-species differences and within-species variation. Ma is designing models and algorithms to determine different types of genomic changes (from point mutation to structural genomic changes) and their functional implications.
In the second, the group is using next-generation sequencing technologies to elucidate the complexity of cancer genomes. They are developing efficient tools to handle massive amount of sequence data in order to identify genomic aberrations associated with cancer development and evolution.
