Tele-Immersion

Parallelizing 3D video codecs for tele-immersion applications (Computer Science)

Tele-immersion or telepresence, where physically-distributed people can see each other and act in the same space, is the logical next step in networked communication.Tele-immersive environments allow us to engage in distributed physical activities such as physical therapy, sport activities, and entertainment. Developing such environments for mass market use, as is proposed in our Tele-immersive Environments for Everyone (TEEVE) project, presents a large number of challenging research problems, spanning system architecture, video compression, user models, and adaptive control techniques. REU students working on this project would refine the video codecs (compression/decompression algorithms) using parallelism to enable better quality video to be transmitted/received within the real-time constraints of an interactive system.
